Description

Deep in a haze ahead lies a yard full of stones. A haunting place with lanterns lighting the entrance night and day. A figure can be seen playing through the mist, hoping on this foot or that, whistling a tune of dire tones, or skipping from here to there.
One foot, then the next, leads you into the obscure cemetery, under the sign that reads,
Good Mourning. And it won't be long, oh no, not long at all before the being comes to greet you.
In a muffled voice too high to be a man's but too low to be a woman's, the masked undertaker will greet,
"Welcome, my dear, to Good Mourning. I do hope you haven't had an upsetting evening."

Rye is the sort who ignores personal space and boundaries to get in on a secret. Gossip and information amuse Rye, tickle the Murkrow's interest to a point where Rye can be driven crazy if nothing is told. However, Rye also has a fascination with horror films, thus scary situations really get their blood pumping!

When it comes to clients Rye is a new respectful creature. Never will a question be asked about the deceased unless the information is necessary. They are polite, thoughtful, and take pride in seeing a funeral service go over well. Tearful mourners who are comforted as their loved ones descend into the earth for eternal rest are what the murkrow lives for.

Not the most intelligent, Rye was never book smart, but more sly and clever. As well as blunt and morbid.
Rye, despite appearing happy, curious, and social, has underlying anxiety, terror, and hopelessness. Rye fears that their identity will be revealed one day and the Murkrow will be shipped off to some prison. This can lead to an incomplete trust in Rye's friends. Paranoid to near extremes, even offering a glass of tea to the crow will be doubted. Is it poisoned? Is there a trick? The constant paranoia and suspicion has lead to Insomnia, which keeps the bird up more often, and makes them that much more crazed.

While Rye is a devious creature with hands that latch onto anything shiny and whose mouth utters obscene horrific comments, they are a lovely person when a true bond is made. Sure, there will still be tricks and frights in for their friends, but they are also madly protective and nurturing in their own way.

History:
Rye began childhood the normal way. Two parents, one male, one female, who fell in love. Rye's mother was a licensed embalmer, preparing the dead for their rest, while Rye's father was a funeral director. So, by the power of love and the deceased, these two living beings, the bride Hoothoot and groom Honchkrow, were wed.

Growing up with such parents, Rye grew used to the dead being normal. Take-your-child-to-work day was always a fascinating lesson on how to pass a soul onto a new life, while casual dinner conversation almost always ended up including a death.
As Rye grew, so did its motor skills, hands becoming clever with the artisan's tools. Soon Rye was carving, sculpting, and drawing with glee, although, not always wonderful at first.
This passion for the arts continued throughout high school. Rye had the usual teenage years, despite being a bit of a morbid oddball. The Murkrow's friends, which were not many, always met on Saturdays for a good game of Dungeons and Dragonites before a bout of frightful movies.
But there comes a time when every bird is shoved from their nest. At 19, Rye moved out, went into the world to start a carving and sculpting business. This Murkrow moved to the city, set up a small shop, found a comfy apartment, and lived a good three years getting the business running with savings and some help from the parents. Before Rye knew it, people were coming in and commissioning for woodwork or statues of this or that and Rye found itself pleasantly busy.

Then, at the age of 23, things began to go awry. Now, Rye had always had a fascination with shiny objects, but soon it had begun to grow into an obsession. Everyday Rye would pass by a local jewelers on the way to work, and everyday Rye would lock eyes with those gorgeous gems reflecting with the sun's rays. The Murkrow was able to resist the lovely stones for one more year. One last year till Rye was 24. The Murkrow pushed into the store, eyeing all the jewelry that gleamed in the light and met the owner for the first time. It was a Donphan woman, perhaps a year older than Rye, and they became fast friends.
As days went on they would visit each others' homes, sipping drinks, watching movies, and enjoying a grand friendship.

When Rye was 25, on the verge of 26, with Donphan the best friend anyone could ask for, the Murkrow went into the shop as usual, those radiant stones smiling up into Rye's red gaze. When the Donphan had her back turned a few of those jewels went missing. And every week on, another gem went missing from the woman's shop. Rye had stolen from the woman, from its best friend, over and over for the next few months. The Murkrow's fingers were fast and dexterous from years of work, the thieving was easy as the Donphan was too trusting of this clever bird.

However, the gems stopped disappearing one day, as Rye had been caught in the act. The Donphan had finally installed camera to watch over her precious jewelry, and the next day Rye came to visit, the police met the Murkrow, the Donphan woman nowhere to be seen.
Rye fled on black wings, stopping by its apartment long enough to notice that there was no salvation there either, the law had the home surrounded. This obsession, this stealing, had caused Rye to lose all the Murkrow loved and had worked its whole life to achieve.

Rye escaped the city, evaded the police, and lived homeless till its 27th birthday came around. There had to be some safe place, Rye thought on night below the moon and stars; some place where a fugitive of the law could hide. And Raccolto was just the spot. It was a small place, simple islands full of simple folk who would have no news of the mainland. This had to be sanctuary, this had to be the haven. Rye stole aboard a ship to these islands, bought a plot of land, that held an old unmanned cemetery, with a few priceless stones the murkrow had saved, and vowed to avoid all things sparkling since, not that the vow could be taken seriously.
As soon as Rye arrived, the bird saw a stray Meowth, or was it even a stray, not that it mattered to this Murkrow. Once the shiny coin on the female's head was seen, Rye swooped her up and stole her away.

-----

Years have gone by since Rye escaped to the islands. Hiding from officials, constantly suspicious of their coming for them, Rye has at least found some peace. Love. Rye found love on these islands, something they thought would never happen. They found a man, not intimidating and who whimpers at their every prank. The man was caring and stubborn, and how could Rye help but fall for him?

They were then wed in the cemetery, ghosts and ghouls rising from the grave to dance with those who attended the wedding. It would not be long afterwards that the pair would increase the size of their family with a couple of adorable twins, a brother and sister named Edgar and Ingrid.
It would seem that even with their life on the run, they can still live the dream.

Insomnia

Funfacts:
• Rye is not Rye's true name, but rather one that was made up to hide and live in peace.
• Insomnia has Rye in its grasp. Due to lack of sleep, the Murkrow has become unpredictable in their movements, and paranoid of simple kindnesses.
• Rye often surrounds Good Mourning in a haze to keep cool, and to add that classic horror movie effect.
• Rye's farm name, Blood Moon, is the first moon after Harvest Moon.
• For whatever reason, Rye always wears a lot of clothing, despite getting hot often.
• Rye had a love of history in school, the mask is said to be used by Murkrow doctors during times of plague. It makes a handy disguise.
• If anything about Rye's past is guessed correctly, Rye will stumble its words, remain utterly silent, or flee the immediate vicinity.
• The hat Rye wears is used to keep the sun off their head.
• Good weather, in this murkrow's opinion, is a cloudy day. Great weather is howling winds, banging shutters, and thunder!
• It is not uncommon to see Rye performing weird actions.
• Rye never sleeps but for once or twice a week. When this day comes, usually Rye collapses into hours of rest.
• On the day that Rye sleeps it is at its most exposed. There is no mask, nor extra clothing.
• Rye has had formal dance lessons for a number of years before leaving their parents.
• Mumba is a dear ally of Rye, she rids the cemetery of scum, as well as curls up with Rye most nights.
• Rye lacks the ability to swim, thus prefers to stay five feet away from any water source.
